Lack of outdoor play is making kids clueless about the food we grow in gardens

From basil on your pizza to coriander in your curry, modern families cook with all sorts of herbs – but only one in three children can name a single one, a survey has found.

And more than half could not name five fruit or vegetables that grow in British gardens, apart from potatoes.

Almost all of the 300 kids aged four to eight quizzed could not name a single variety of apple. The survey by Sudocrem, for a scheme called Get Out And Grow, 87% of households have a garden.

Human faces are now a different shape because of all the processed food we eat

But not many children know what grows in them, or can recognise gardening tools such as trowels, forks or watering cans. And 40% believe bees are bad for plants.

Sudocrem said: “Outdoor play works wonders for a child’s learning and development. The average five to 11-year-old spends just five hours a week playing outside, compared to 45.5 hours in front of a screen.

“Get Out and Grow aims to make a dent in statistics like these by giving children a reason to go outside and get their hands dirty in the best kind of way.”
