Labour urges Boris Johnson to bring Cyprus rape trial teenager home

Labour are calling on Boris Johnson to bring home the British teenager facing jail in Cyprus over claims she lied about a gang-rape.

The 19-year-old woman will be sentenced on Tuesday and could be locked up for a year.

Shadow Women’s Minister Naz Shah said: “She has PTSD, urgently requiring treatment.

She is on a no-fly list that means she can’t leave Cyprus.

“Dominic Raab (the Foreign Secretary) is saying he is ‘extremely concerned’.

“The rest of us are only saying one thing – ‘bring our girl home’.”

The alleged victim said she was raped by up to 12 Israeli tourists in a hotel room in Ayia Napa on July 17.

But she said Cypriot police made her sign a retraction which led to her being convicted of public mischief at Famagusta District Court.

The teenager yesterday urged the Government to intervene, saying: “Every second of this ordeal has been a waking nightmare. I’m 19 and all I want to do is clear my name and come home to my family.

“I would say to both the Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister, both of whom are fathers, ‘Please support me with your actions, not just with your words.’

“Time is running out for me. Please, please help.”
