LABOUR have set out a timetable for the potential leadership contest to replace Keir Starmer.
The party has said that if there is a contest, the winner will be unveiled on August 29.
But if he continues to be unopposed for the top job, Andy Burnham will be installed on July 17 at a special leadership conference.
Only members who have been in the Labour Party continuously since last Christmas will be eligible to vote, the date being six months since the timetable was unveiled.
These are the key dates:
- Thursday, June 25 – Freeze date for elector eligibility (members who joined on or before December 25, 2025, are eligible to vote)
- Thursday, July 9 – Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) nominations open
- Monday, July 13 – PLP hustings for prospective candidates
- Wednesday, July 15 – PLP nominations close at 6pm; affiliate nominations open
- Thursday, July 16 – Affiliate nominations close at 6pm
- Friday, July 17 – Leadership special conference if only one candidate is nominated
- Monday, July 20 – Constituency Labour Party (CLP) nominations open if more than one candidate is nominated
- Friday, July 31 – CLP nominations close at 5pm
- Thursday, August 6 – Ballot of members and affiliated supporters opens
- Thursday, August 27 – Ballot closes at 5pm
- Saturday, August 29 – Winner announced, if the position is contested, at a special leadership contest
Candidates need the backing of 81 MPs and must be a member of the House of Commons.
They must also have the backing of at least three affiliates, at least two of which must be trade unions, or from 5% of CLPs.
