Labour third choice in Scotland despite having first-class policy ideas

Solving the care home crisis, fixing the nation’s housing problem and a green revolution to put Scotland back on track in the 21st century.

These Scottish Labour policies are hard to argue with – they should chime with every household in the land.

So why is Labour the third party in Holyrood? Why is it third in the polls for next year’s election?

That’s a place behind an indefensible Tory party which has no shame at being the poster boy for the rape clause and the bedroom tax.

Scotland needs these Labour party polices. It needs a liberal, forward-thinking movement which prides itself on people and not protecting profits of big business and penalising those who need the most help.

But at some point in the constitutional past, the party took its eye off the ball and the SNP picked it up.

The country’s ruling party deserves credit for the way it has galvanised a loyal and strong support around policies which Scotland can be proud of.

But where does that leave Labour?

Somewhere in no man’s land facing a battle of hearts and minds with the SNP, which has a formidable, popular leader.

When the chips are down, it takes strong leadership to steer a ship over stormy waters and the Scottish Labour party faithful are looking at Richard Leonard for those qualities.

Yesterday, he announced a raft of big policies ahead of next year’s Holyrood election.

His party wants to create a national care service, build 12,000 new council homes per year, introduce a cap on private rents and offer a jobs guarantee for college leavers.

Each of these on their own would likely be supported by a majority of Scots.

Voters like the policies but is anyone listening to Leonard? Right now, the answer appears to be no.

As repeated polls have found, most Scots feel they can rely on Nicola Sturgeon to deliver a broad centre-left platform of policies not too dissimilar to the ones being offered up by Labour.

If we are to see a Labour resurgence under Leonard he needs to make his voice heard.

If he can’t, his party faces years in the doldrums – and will be Scotland’s third choice as long as it stays there.
