A councillor has been suspended from the Labour group on Lambeth Council after being charged with sexual assault and engaging in controlling behaviour.
Irfan Mohammad 42, of Peckham, appeared in court on Monday alongside two other men.
The charges relate to an incident that took place on July 12, when officers were called to a street in Peckham to reports of an alleged assault on a woman.
She was not taken to hospital. The men were arrested on the scene and consequently charged.
Kaymren Mohammed, 38, of Peckham, was charged with engaging in controlling behaviour and three counts of assault by beating.
Zairab Mohammed, 72, of Peckham have also been charged with engaging in controlling behaviour.
They will all next appear in custody at Inner London Crown Court on Monday, August 11.
Mr Mohammed had been a Labour councillor at Brixton Town Hall since 2018, after having first been elected to represent Clapham Park ward in 2022.
He sat in the Lambeth cabinet as Deputy Cabinet Member for Businesses but has been suspended from that role.
He currently appears as an independent councillor on the Lambeth website.
A statement issued by a Lambeth Council spokesperson said: “Following notification to the council from the police of an arrest and subsequent criminal charges, Councillor Irfan Mohammed has been removed from his position as a Deputy Cabinet Member and all council committees, pending resolution of the allegations against him.
“His membership of Lambeth Labour Group has also been suspended.
“We are unable to make further comment due to the ongoing criminal investigation.”
