Labour surge to poll lead in FOUR surveys in a row as Tory support plummets

Labour has surged to a poll lead in four surveys in a row as a range of experts claim Tory support has plummeted.

All four polls - by four different polling firms - were published in the last 36 hours and show the Conservatives tumbling amid the Brexit chaos.

It comes just weeks before voters go to the polls in nearly 250 council areas to elect more than 8,000 local politicians.

The local elections on May 2 will be a major test for the Tories - who are defending half the seats up for grabs and have been warned they could face a "Brexit penalty".

Today's and yesterday's surveys come after previous polls showed a wide range of results, including the two main parties neck-and-neck and the Conservatives ahead.

The polls are:

  • Lab 41% Con 37% (Survation) - poll of 6,062 people in England and Wales, April 3-8
  • Lab 40% (N/A) Con 21% (N/A) (Hanbury) - poll of 2,000 British adults, April 5-8
  • Lab 31% Con 29% (BMG) - poll of 1,500 British adults, April 2-5, including smaller parties
  • Lab 35% Con 32% (Kantar) - poll of 1,172 people online, April 4-8

A fifth poll, released hours earlier than the others yesterday, showed parties tied:

  • Lab 32% Con 32% (ComRes) - April 5-7

Survation's findings - the most recent and published this afternoon - show Tory support plummeting over the last two years.

The pollster put the party on 37% once Don't Knows were included, down eight points since the 2017 election.

Labour was on 41%, down one point since the election, as smaller parties benefited at the cost of the main two.

The poll gave the Lib Dems a two-point boost (to 10%) and UKIP a five-point boost (7%).

But Change UK - the name for the Independent Group of MPs - polled just 1% in Survation's measures.

Change UK did do better in the survey released today by BMG, which put Chuka Umunna's splinter group on 8%.

BMG also found 6% support for the Brexit Party, at apparent cost of support for the two main parties.

BMG put Labour on 31% and the Tories on 29% - with Tory backing plummeting 10 points since a voting intention measure from last month, according to Britain Elects.

Labour has previously refused to comment on polls, suggesting they do not show the whole picture.

But when a Deltapoll survey gave Labour a five-point lead last month, Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson claimed Labour was winning more support by offering a "consensus" on Brexit.

He told the BBC: "It’s no surprise to me that we’ve had a little boost in the polls, because we’re offering that consensus."
