Labour storm to victory in by-election triggered by racist video scandal

Labour retained one of their seats on Liverpool Council after a landslide win for the party in the Old Swan by-election.

Party candidate and disability campaigner William Shortall will join other Labour elected members on the council, where the party holds 72 of the 90 seats.

The vote, which was held yesterday, saw the Lib Dems beaten in to second place in the poll behind the Liberal Party.

The election was prompted by former Lord Mayor Peter Brennan's resignation following a racist video scandal.

Councillor Brennan is understood to have shared a video on a Whatsapp group with fellow councillors that made comparisons between a black man and a monkey.

He had been Lord Mayor for only a few months when the news emerged and was forced to resign from that position almost immediately.

He was replaced in that role by councillor Anna Rothery, who became the city's first black Lord Mayor earlier this month.

He later resigned as ward councillor for Old Swan , triggering the by-election, as well as quitting the Labour Party.

Mayor Joe Anderson tweeted a picture of himself and other councillors with Mr Shortall, saying: "Congratulations to @William_OldSwan for a resounding Labour victory in the Old Swan by-election today".

The full results of the election are:

Labour 1153

Lib Dems 272

Greens 130

Liberals 293

OSATC 138

Conservatives 96
