Labour say Barry Gardiner 'wrong' for breaking distancing rules at George Floyd protest

Shadow Foreign Secretary Lisa Nandy has criticised a Labour MP for posting about breaking social distancing rules while attending a Black Lives Matter protest.

Former front bencher Barry Gardiner joined the demonstration outside Parliament yesterday.

But in it he appeared to celebrate breaking social distancing rules.

Mr Gardiner tweeted a picture of himself standing very close to fellow protestors.

He captioned the picture: "Been social distancing since March. Today I broke it to join the #BlackLivesMatter demo outside Parliament."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan backed the protests yesterday, but begged people who attended to stay two metres apart to stop the risk of coronavirus spreading.

Asked about the protests in London yesterday, Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary said she completely understood why young people were joining them.

But she also called on them to observe social distancing rules.

She told Sky News: "I want to see those young people making their voices heard.

"I don't want to see them in hospital struggling to breathe with coronavirus."

Asked directly about Mr Gardiner she said that his actions were "quite dangerous".

She added: "I think it was wrong for a member of Parliament saying overtly that they were not going to observe social distancing measures.

"These are the measures that have saved lives and stopped our NHS from being overwhelmed.

"We cannot give the impression that social distancing does not matter. "

Mr Gardiner has defended his actions.

He said that as an MP he had an "obligation...to call out racial injustice and to stand in solidarity with the very people who, because of that injustice, are so much more likely to die from coronavirus."

He wrote: “Yesterday I joined thousands of young people marching against racial injustice and in protest at the murder of George Floyd.

“I took a knee as a mark of respect and paused with those remarkable young people to reflect on the racism faced by so many people of colour not just in the USA but here in Britain too.

“The number of people protesting made it impossible to observe the social distancing rules which I have strictly observed since March.

“I know how much people have suffered to keep each other safe and I apologise to them for the hurt my failure to observe the rules has caused.

“On Tuesday evening I received a negative test result.

"I am therefore confident that I did not infect anyone with whom I came into contact."
