Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson wades into Liverpool Council bullying row

The Labour Party's deputy leader Tom Watson has raised the issue of allegations against a Liverpool Labour Councillor - who has been the subject of multiple complaints by female members.

Last week, the ECHO revealed that Wavertree elected member David Cummings has been the subject of multiple complaints and that according to a chief whip's report from last year - he accepted a written warning about his behaviour.

The issue has raised its head again after his fellow Wavertree Councillor Clare McIntyre placed another formal complaint against her colleague this month after she was left in tears following a recent Labour group meeting.

When asked about the allegations by the ECHO, Cllr Cummings repeatedly said they were all 'absolute lies', adding: "I have had no written warning, I haven't seen anybody - it is all unfounded lies."

But the ECHO has seen a copy of a written statement from Cllr Cummings last year which apologised for 'inappropriate and unacceptable' language used towards Cllr McIntyre.

Now, the ECHO has seen evidence that Mr Watson - who has been looking into issues of bullying in the party - has become involved in the case of Cllr Cummings.

In an email sent to national Labour Party bosses, he wrote: "I understand some harassment complaints were sent by Cllr Clare McIntyre to Anna Hutchinson at the North West regional officer regarding a male councillor colleague who has been formally warned about his harassment of several women, of which Cllr McIntyre is one - and his behaviour continues unchallenged."

The deputy leader added that he would be 'grateful' if those at the very top of the party could look into the situation.

When contacted by the ECHO today, Cllr Cummings said he embraces the fact the Tom Watson will look into the claims against him - reiterating his assertion that 'none of it is true.'

He said: "I say bring it on, because the truth will come out.

"I embrace Tom Watson looking into tis, I support it because this will be proved to be flawed."

He added: "If this was true, I wouldn't be the candidate for Wavertree.'

And it would appear that Cllr Cummings has the support of those in charge of the Wavertree Constituency Labour Party, who issued an email to all members yesterday which dismissed the complaints made as 'lies and smears.'

The message, written by ward lead Paul Filby and sent by secretary Nina Houghton stated: "From the 27th March we're officially in the local election period and are supporting our sitting councillor, Dave Cummings.

"Dave works full time as Wavertree Ward councillor, living on his £11000 annual councillors allowance and is a committed socialist.

"Dave is currently seeking legal advice regarding the malicious slurs and lies currently being distributed by the right-wing media, and others, and needs your support."
