The Labour candidates for Dumbarton, the Vale and Balloch in the upcoming local council elections have been revealed.

Three sitting Labour members will stand for re-election, along with two former councillors.

In addition, activist and human rights lawyer Gurpreet Singh Johal bids to become the only Sikh councillor in Scotland as he stands in the Dumbarton ward alongside David McBride.

In the Leven ward, John Millar will stand alongside Michelle McGinty, who was former education convener, when she was last elected in 2012.

In Lomond ward, former council leader Martin Rooney stands alongside Hazel Sorrell who represented Balloch and Haldane when Labour led the administration between 2012 and 2017.

Duncan Robinson, Secretary of the West Dunbartonshire Local Government Committee said: “I am delighted to present the candidates for the three wards covering Dumbarton, the Vale and Balloch.

“I believe this group of councillors will work tirelessly for constituents and ensure these towns and villages recover stronger than ever as we emerge from the Covid pandemic.”

The local council elections take place on Thursday, May 5.
