Sadiq Khan, the shadow justice secretary, will try to develop a policy programme that strikes the right balance between punishment and reform and works to protect the public, support victims and stop crime.
Advisers include Barry Mizen, whose son Jimmy was murdered in 2008, Dame Helen Reeves, of Victim Support, Matthew Ryder QC, Lady Corston, who carried out a review of vulnerable women in the justice system, and Rob Reiner, of the London School of Economics.
Tom Clark writes:
Ed Miliband promised to give Kenneth Clarke the space to contain the prison population, but during the recent row over rape ended up calling for his removal, and David Cameron's government has now – with Labour encouragement – reverted to the bang 'em up orthodoxy.
Sadiq Khan's review has thus been reviewed before it has even reported, and the remaining question is whether he can now say anything meaningful about the rehabilitation side, having already effectively conceded that even more resources will now be needed for bigger prisons.
