Labour Party volunteer 'assaulted' while delivering election leaflets

A Labour Party volunteer was reportedly assaulted while out delivering election leaflets today.

Labour's Warrington North parliamentary candidate, Charlotte Nichols, posted on Twitter where she said she was "heartbroken" about the attack.

The incident occurred in the Birchwood area this afternoon.

Ms Nichols said in a Tweet: "Heartbroken to hear from one of my volunteers who has been assaulted today, in broad daylight, while delivering leaflets."

But the politician says she is grateful to Cheshire Police, who are dealing with the matter, and called on candidates and supporters from all parties to condemn the act of 'cowardice'.

Alison McGovern, who is standing to be re-elected as Labour MP for Wirral South, added her support, saying, the assault was a "terrible act" and "should not happen to anyone."

Ms Nichols, 28, has since e-mailed all volunteers in the constituency about safety.

She said: "I don't want to frighten anyone but I want you to be aware of an incident that happened this afternoon where one of our volunteers was assaulted by a member of the public while out delivering leaflets.

"They are okay and the incident has been logged with the police who are taking it very seriously.

"In light of this, I want to underline that our absolute priority in this campaign is the safety and wellbeing of all of our volunteers.

"Please can everyone take steps to ensure their safety, including not leafleting alone where this is possible, not taking any risks if you feel unsafe, and contacting the police, and myself, with any issues.

"I hope this will be an isolated incident and I'm sure everyone will join me in sending the volunteer affected their best wishes."

The General Election will take place on December 12.
