Labour Party’s Seána Ó Rodaigh is the third woman to be elected as Mayor of Fingal

Labour Party’s Seána Ó Rodaigh has been elected as Mayor of Fingal today.

She is the third woman to take up the role since it was created in 2006.

And this is the seventh time a woman has led Fingal County Council since the formation of the Council in 1994.

Cllr Ó Rodaigh won a vote against Cllr Joan Hopkins (Social Democrats) and Cllr Punam Rane (Fine Gael) in the election for Mayor while Cllr Whooley overcame Cllr Natalie Treacy (Sinn Fein) in the election for Deputy Mayor.

The teacher in St Patrick’s Senior National School represents the Balbriggan Local Electoral Area and was first elected as a councillor in 2019.

She said that she is: "Honoured to be elected Mayor of Fingal this evening with cross-party support.”

The Labour woman is replacing outgoing Mayor David Healy.

Cllr Daniel Whooley of the Green Party was also elected as Deputy Mayor this evening.

He represents the Ongar Electoral Area, and has been an elected member since 2019. He is currently a student at TUD Blanchardstown where he is studying Cybersecurity.

The results were revealed at the annual meeting of Fingal County Council which was held today at the Grand Hotel, Malahide.
