Labour Party conference – live: Keir Starmer to promise ‘decade of national renewal’ in key conference speech

PA

Starmer speech

Sir Keir Starmer will vow to “heal” Britain after 13 years of Conservative Party rule that have “ruined” the country when he delivers his speech to Labour conference.

The Labour leader is scheduled to address delegates in Liverpool at 2pm following speeches by several shadow frontbenchers.

Emily Thornberry, the shadow attorney general, was among those who delivered remarks earlier, telling activists, members and MPs that Britain has been “trapped in a never-ending time loop of Tory incompetence.”

Earlier, Starmer’s campaign chief said Britain must build on parts of the greenbelt to secure the homes it needs but that opposition to new developments will not be ignored.

Pat McFadden, Labour’s national campaign coordinator,  accepted there could be some opposition to Labour’s proposals to build on some parts of the greenbelt.

Speaking on the morning broadcast round the senior Labour figure said opposition should be taken into account, but that new homes were necessary.

“We don’t want opposition to be ignored – but we have to do this," he said. "The country has to face up to this."
