Labour paid price of Brexit fudge but now they must change course before it's too late

Labour has nobody to blame for their disastrous election result except their own leadership.

Richard Leonard knew Scotland was overwhelmingly a Remain country but was too cowardly to carve out a distinct position from the London leadership.

Whether this was an unforgivable strategic miscalculation or a pitiful lack of leadership is a matter for debate.

But what is inarguable is that the end result has been a destruction of Labour’s traditional support base.

This newspaper encouraged Labour to take a strong pro-Remain position in the aftermath of the referendum.

They refused to listen and have paid the price.

The question is: what happens next?

Labour has given a great deal to this country.

They are responsible for tackling inequality, protecting rights and lifting millions out of poverty across Britain.

Their achievements should not be forgotten.

The tragedy is the current leadership is in danger of trashing that proud legacy. They must change course before it’s too late.

Everyday heroes

There are few workers in Scotland more deserving of praise than our ambulance staff.

It’s hard to imagine a more stressful job, as they speed across the country saving lives.

But trade union Unison has warned today that the Ambulance Service is in a critical condition, with workers at breaking point.

The service has had an increase in funding and staff numbers but ambulance workers claim that demand for their services is at an all-time high.

That means they can’t always turn up as quickly as they would like.

And it also means many staff have suffered verbal or physical attacks from patients.

There is absolutely no excuse for attacking these professionals as they go about their business.

So if you or your family are unfortunate enough to be in need of an ambulance, please be patient
and show a little respect to these everyday heroes.
