Labour MP Michael Dugher – tipped to take over from Chris Bryant as shadow culture secretary – apparently hit a duff note early on Monday, when the background on his Twitter page was still showing campaigners holding “I’m backing Andy Burnham” placards. However, by 10am the Barnsley East MP, who describes himself on his Twitter bio as a “Beatles and curry obsessive”, had swapped the photo for a Billy Bragg-style shot of himself playing guitar.

Dugher is a keen musician: as well as playing guitar, bass, banjo, and the piano, he sang Teenage Kicks with Feargal Sharkey at last year’s Barnsley music festival.

If he is elevated to the shadow cabinet, Dugher will be up against fellow karaoke fan John Whittingdale – Monkey would love to hear the pair in a heavy metal singoff.
