Labour MP says 2-week 'circuit breaker' lockdown would 'put the virus back 28 days'

Shadow Minister Rachel Reeves says a 2-week 'circuit breaker' lockdown would 'put the virus back 28 days' and give the government time to rectify the ‘failed’ test and trace system.

MP Rachel Reeves was speaking on Good Morning Britain and was adamant Labour will 'support all measures that help get control of this virus’ and ignoring the advice from SAGE scientists could prove costly in the long run.

The Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer this week has called for a 2 to 3-week lockdown as recommended by SAGE three weeks ago.

However, it is understood, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is not yet heading towards a full national lockdown in England despite calls from the opposition leader.

Sir Keir Starner and the Labour party believe the government’s attempts to tackle the virus isn’t working and a snap 2-week’circuit breaker’ lockdown is needed.

Following questions from Piers Morgan and Suzanna Reid MP Rachel Reeves said: “The circuit break Kier Starmer made yesterday is absolutely based on the science.

“On Monday we saw the minutes of that SAGE meeting from three weeks ago that hadn’t been published until that point calling for a circuit break and saying the actions including the tiered system that the government have just introduced do not go far enough in getting control of this virus.

“What the SAGE scientists say is that a two or three week lockdown would swap two weeks of growth in transmission for two weeks in decay and you would go back 28 days in terms of the virus which would buy us time.

“We should use that time wisely, use that time to fix the failed test and trace model”
