Labour MP ordered out of chamber for branding Boris Johnson a liar

A Labour MP was asked to leave the House of Commons today after refusing to withdraw claims that Boris Johnson has “lied to the House and the country over and over again".

Dawn Butler, the Labour MP for Brent Central, made an impassioned speech in which she called out the Prime Minister for repeatedly 'lying to the House of Commons and the country."

She said: "Poor people in this country have paid with their lives because the Prime Minister spent the last 18 months misleading this house and the country."

Referencing a number of claims made by Mr Johnson, including that the government had re-instated the nursing bursary, she added: "I am disappointed that the Prime Minister has not come to this house to correct the record, he has lied to this house and the country over and over again."

When asked to withdraw the comments by temporary deputy speaker Judith Cummins, Ms Butler added: "The Prime Minister has lied to this house and it's funny that we get in trouble in this house for calling out the lie, rather than the person lying."

When asked again to withdraw the comments, Ms Butler said: "I have reflected on my words and somebody needs to tell the truth that the Prime Minister has lied."

After this, Ms Butler was ordered to withdraw immediately from the house for the remainder of the day's sitting.
