Labour MP Keith Vaz taken to hospital hours after facing six-month Commons ban

Labour MP Keith Vaz has been taken to hospital hours after it emerged that he could be facing a six-month Commons ban for damaging the reputation of Parliament.

The House of Commons' standards watchdog recommended the record ban after a damning report found Mr Vaz had "expressed willingness" to purchase cocaine for others.

It was later announced by his office that the MP had been admitted to hospital, but a statement on his website did not say why.

Mr Vaz's office initially said he had "been treated for a serious mental-health condition for the last three years" after the scandal was exposed by the Sunday Mirror in 2016.

The paper claimed the Leicester East MP had met two men in his London flat to engage in paid-for sex.

MPs ruled his behaviour was a "very serious breach" of the Code of Conduct - which says members must not "damage the reputation and integrity of the Commons", The Mirror reports.

The Committee accused him of "failing repeatedly to answer questions" and trying to obstruct the probe.

Mr Vaz told investigators he did not pay for sex and the men were there to discuss “decorating his flat” and also claimed he lost his memory after drinking a glass of “spiked” water.

He told the men he was a washing machine salesman called Jim.

But the scathing Commons Standards Committee report branded his explanations “frankly, ludicrous”.

MPs still have to vote to approve six-month Commons ban recommended by the committee.
