Labour MP John Mann's election warning as he steps down to take peerage

Outspoken Labour MP John Mann today steps down from the Commons to take a new position in the House of Lords.

And he left with a warning that a general election would not crack the Brexit deadlock in the Commons.

His departure opens the door for a dramatic by-election in his Bassetlaw constituency if Boris Johnson is unable to secure a December election.

Labour has selected pro-Remain London councillor Sally Gimson to be the party's candidate in the seat.

While Mr Mann had a moderately safe-seat majority of 4,852, Bassetlaw is a Brexit-leaning constituency, having voted to leave by 68.32% in 2016.

He will assume the title of Lord Mann of Holbeck Moor.

He told the Yorkshire Post Parliament had been "paralysed" by the Brexit deadlock.

And he warned a snap general election would return another minority government, with all the same indecisiveness as the current Commons makeup.

He added: "The power of the Prime Minister, Speaker and the whips will all need to be reconsidered if our democracy is to properly function.

"I am not holding my breath at such maturity.”
