Labour MP Ben Bradshaw 'one hundred percent certain' Scotland will become independent

Labour MP Ben Bradshaw has broken ranks to claim he’s “one hundred per cent” certain Scotland will be independent.

Bradshaw, re-elected in Exeter last month, made his prediction in an interview with a German newspaper.

He revealed Scots members of his family would vote Yes in a second referendum, having opposed independence in 2014.

Bradshaw warned: “The political class in England - and this includes my own party - must very quickly recognise the Scots' right to self-determination .

“I am married to a Scotsman. All members of our family in Scotland voted against independence in the 2014 referendum.

“But at the last general election in December, all of them voted for the Scottish National Party for the first time in their lives. And they would now vote for Scotland's independence differently than in 2014.

“Scotland will become independent. For me that is one hundred percent certain.”

The quotes were translated online from the German version published by Der Tagesspiegel.

Bradshaw also criticised outgoing party leader Jeremy Corbyn, blaming him for heavy defeat in the December election.

He pinned some blame on Corbyn for Remain losing the EU referendum in 2016.

Bradshaw, an MP since 1997, backed Keir Starmer as the only credible new leader for Labour.

Bradshaw studied German at university and is a former Berlin correspondent for BBC radio.

The comments come as Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard prepares for a review on the party’s policy on the constitution.

On Thursday, a Scottish Labour source claimed the party could move support a three-question referendum with a federal option short of independence.

Leonard said: "The creation of a separate Scottish state is neither inevitable nor desirable. We desperately need to transform our society and economy so it works for the many, but the SNP's blueprint for cuts in an independent Scotland would do the very opposite."
