Labour MP attacked and mugged on way home from Parliament

A Labour MP was attacked and mugged by a group of up to six people on his way home from Parliament

Adrian Bailey, MP for West Bromwich West, had his wallet and phone stolen in the attack, which took place in Westminster.

He was left with bruises over his body after someone jumped on his back. He was also hit over the head with a milk carton.

The 72-year-old said that after the first person jumped on him, a second attacked him and a third blocked the exit with his bike.

As he called for help, someone came over, but it turned out to be another attacker.

"I appreciate that many other people have gone through what I went through last night and it really brought home to me the value of having bobbies on the beat to deter such attacks," Mr Bailey told the BBC.

"Every member of the public deserves the right to walk about in a safe and non-threatening environment.

"The Metropolitan Police response has been excellent and they are working hard with me to identify the perpetrators of this attack."

No arrests have so far been made but the Metropolitan Police are investigating.
