Labour loses Bolsover District Council for first time in 40 years

Labour has lost control in Bolsover for the first time in 40 years - traditionally seen as a party stronghold.

The Derbyshire district council now has two Conservative councillors, one Lib Dem and the Independents now have 16 seats - an increase of ten.

Labour holds 18 seats on the council, after suffering a loss of 13, meaning there is no overall control.

Bolsover, an old mining town, has been represented in Parliament by former miner and veteran Labour MP Dennis Skinner, nicknamed the Beast of Bolsover, since 1970.

One man tweeted that he used to work for the council, and said it was "absolutely unthinkable" that Labour would lose control.
