Labour lose seat on Manchester city council in Clayton and Openshaw by-election

The Labour Party has lost a seat on Manchester city council after a by-election.

The result, however, makes no difference to Labour's overall control of the council.

Independent Kenneth Dobson, a former city centre Liberal Democrat councillor, took the previously Labour held seat in the Clayton and Openshaw ward by 108 votes over Labour candidate Sherita Mandongwe.

He polled 1,191 votes to her 1,083 votes.

Sham Raja Akhtar, the Conservative Party candidate, came in third, followed by the Lib Dem and Green Party candidates.

Turn-out in an electorate of 12,623 voters was just less than 20 per cent.

The full results were:

Sham Raja Akhtar, Conservative, 102.

Kenneth Dobson, Independent, 1,191.

Sherita Mandongwe, Labour Party, 1,083.

Claude-Diele Nsumbu, Liberal Democrats, 57.

Jake Welsh, Green Party, 51.

The council confirmed there were five rejected ballot papers.

The by-election was called following the death after a short illness in December last year of respected Labour councillor for Clayton and Openshaw Andy Harland.

Coun Harland, a father-of-two, was first elected to the council more than 20 years ago.

Tributes were paid to a 'positive, principled and integral' figure of the community, who was also an active trade unionist, after his passing.

The result of the by-election means Labour now hold 92 seats on the council, with the Lib Dems holding three and one independent - Coun Dobson.

Labour councillors Donna Ludford and Sean McHale hold the other two seats in the Clayton and Openshaw ward.

The party lost a seat in West Didsbury to the Lib Dems in the 2019 local elections.
