Monty Python, Strictly Come Dancing and pink buses: David Cameron's final PMQs

Here are the other big stories from the day:

Welcome to The Independent’s live blog ahead of David Cameron’s final Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons before he steps down as leader of the Conservative party and Prime Minister.

Shortly after facing questions from Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, Mr Cameron will head to Buckingham Palace to hand in his resignation to the Queen – paving the way for Theresa May, the Prime Minister-elect, to enter Downing Street later this evening.

But while divisions in the Tory party begin the long process of healing under a new leader, Labour’s descent into self-destructive warfare has entered a new phase after the party’s governing body ruled that Mr Corbyn can automatically stand for re-election as the party’s leader.

Owen Smith, the Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, is expected to formally announce later today that he will be challenging the Labour leader for his position after a negotiation between two collapsed. Angela Eagle, the former Shadow Business Secretary, also announced her candidacy earlier this week.
