Today, with Keir Starmer named Labour leader and Angela Rayner deputy, a three-month contest to replace Jeremy Corbyn finally comes to an end.
What started as a debate about Brexit, towns and the left became completely overshadowed as the coronavirus gripped Britain.
But almost half a million Labour members, affiliates and one-off registered supporters still cast their vote in the leadership contest.
Now the full results have been released and they make an interesting comparison to Jeremy Corbyn's victories in 2015 and 2016.

Mr Corbyn won in the first round in 2015 with 59.5% of the vote (251,417), compared to 19% for Andy Burnham, 17% for Yvette Cooper and 4.5% for Liz Kendall.
In 2016 he won 313,209 votes (62%) compared to Owen Smith’s 193,229 (38%).
Keir Starmer won in the first round and in all three sections - especially registered supporters.
Despite being the overwhelming frontrunner, it took Angela Rayner until the third round to win. She needed 50% in a round in order to triumph.
In the deputy leadership race, A&E doctor Rosena Allin-Khan came second while left-wing die-hard Corbyn ally Richard Burgon came third.
Below are the results in full.
