Labour leader Keir Starmer reveals what he calls a 'cob' during visit to East Midlands

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer gave an answer to the feisty debate over what people call a 'cob' during a visit to the East Midlands.

On Saturday, April 24, Mr Starmer was visiting Ilkeston Town Football Club following the widespread outrage over plans for a European Super League, plans for which have since come crashing down.

We sat down with the Labour leader to chat about the local elections on May 6 as well as grassroots football, but one question remained unanswered.

Here a filling, from ham to chips, is put in a 'cob'.

Across the country, however, people refer to the classic cob as anything from a barm cake and bread roll to a bap or a bread cake.

Mr Starmer was born in Southwark, London, but his answer to the big question may surprise you.

He said: "What do I call a cob? Well, there are lots of different things you can call a cob.

"Well, I would say butty. That's not from St Pancras that's from my Leeds days. I lived in Leeds for a number of years and I picked up butty there. I'm sticking with butty.

"Once you've lived in Leeds for a number of years you can't move away from butty."

He added Londoners typically call a cob - or butty - a roll.

Mr Starmer spent a number of years at the University of Leeds, graduating in Law in 1985.

He now represents Holborn and St Pancras as the member of parliament.
