Labour leader Keir Starmer isolating after his child tests positive for Covid-19

Labour Leader Kier Starmer is self-isolating after his child tested positive for Coronavirus.

The leader of the opposition had just finished Prime Minister’s Questions when he was notified that he would need to isolate.

A statement from Mr Starmer’s office said that he has been conducting negative tests daily however he and his family will now self-isolate following his child testing positive today.

The statement read: “One of Keir’s children tested positive for Covid this lunchtime. In line with the rules, Keir and his family will now be self-isolating.”

"Keir was already doing daily tests and tested negative this morning. He will continue to take daily tests.”

The announcement came shortly after Mr Starmer had spent Prime Ministers Questions asking Boris Johnson why he had attempted to avoid self-isolation himself following Health Secretary Sajid Javid’s positive Covid case.

Speaking in the Commons today, the Labour leader questioned the Prime Minister's actions around self-isolation.

Mr Starmer said: “The British people are trying to follow the rules, how can they when ministers are making it up as they go along?”

Mr Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak had previously attempted to avoid self-isolation by placing themselves in a test event that would have seen them produce daily negative tests for 10 days instead of isolating.

This is the same system that is expected to roll out nationwide for close contacts to positive tests from August 16.

The backlash from this decision prompted a quick U-turn, ending in Mr Johnson spending 10 days isolation in his country house of Chequers.

This is the fourth time that Labour leader Keir Starmer has had to self-isolate since the beginning of the pandemic.
