Labour leader Alan Kelly blames Manchester United as he issues apology after being caught on Luas without a mask

Labour leader Alan Kelly has issued a public apology after he was caught on the Luas without a mask - because of Manchester United.

A picture of Mr Kelly maskless looking at his phone was obtained by the Irish Independent, and the Tipperary admitted this morning that he was "distracted while watching the Man United match".

His statement read: "I am a strong supporter of all the public health guidelines and rules, and always endeavour to wear my mask where required.

"My track record on calling for clear guidelines around mask-wearing speaks for itself.

“While getting the Luas home last night I obviously inadvertently didn’t have my mask on for a period and I want to apologise for this mistake.

“I was distracted while watching the Man United match on my phone and adjusting my headphones at the same time. We all make mistakes. Sorry.”

Manchester United lost 3-2 to RB Leipzig last night, crashing out of the UEFA Champions League at the group stage.

A passenger not wearing a face mask on the Luas can be issued a fine of €80 if caught on board by Gardai.
