Labour councillor suspended by party but vows to fight decision

A Liverpool Labour Party city councillor has been suspended by the party, the ECHO can confirm.

Cllr Sam Gorst was only elected to represent Cressington ward on the city council last April.

Prior to his election, the Labour Party began an investigation into claims of antisemitic social media comments.

Cllr Gorst has now been suspended by the party.

The ECHO understands this will be for a period of 12 months.

A Labour Party spokesperson said: "The Labour Party takes all complaints extremely seriously and they are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate disciplinary action is taken."

It is not clear at this stage whether the suspension relates directly to the complaints and investigation of last year or whether it is related to different complaints.

In recent days Cllr Gorst has closed down his twitter account.

When asked for a comment by the ECHO, he said he will be appealing the party's decision.

He said: "I will be appealing this decision.

"In the meantime I will be concentrating on representing my residents in Cressington and carrying out several community projects.

"That is all I have to say at this stage."

Cllr Gorst will not be able to represent the Labour Party during the period of his suspension.
