Labour councillor becomes Glasgow Lord Provost after SNP colleague's expenses scandal

A Labour councillor has been elected Glasgow’s new Lord Provost after an expenses scandal brought down his predecessor.

Philip Braat became the city’s top civic dignitary after defeating the SNP’s Norman McLeod.

He said: “Our citizens have placed our trust in us and I am humbled to have been trusted with this role. I will work every single day to repay this trust.”

The SNP's Eva Bolander was Lord Provost until the Daily Record revealed she had spent over £8,000 of public money on clothing and beauty products.

Her spending spree included £1,150 on 23 pairs of shoes, £665 for five coats, up to £374 for six jackets and nearly £415 for eight pairs of trousers.

She also charged the taxpayer £389 for Harris Tweed fabric, £992 for 14 dresses, £435 for seven blazers, £358 for spectacles and £200 for a designer hat.

The shoe-loving councillor also treated herself to 10 taxpayer-funded haircuts worth £751 and 20 nail treatments, including on her toes.

A backlash from SNP colleagues in the city chambers led to Bolander standing down.

Council insiders believed the succession battle would pit Braat against SNP councillor Elaine Ballantyne, but she is believed to have pulled out last night.

McLeod stood instead, but was outvoted by Braat supporters.

Braat said: “I want to begin by thanking councillor Norman McLeod for his service. Even though he may not know this, I have the upmost respect for him.

“Can I thank colleagues from across the chamber for putting their trust in me to serve the constituents of Glasgow.

“It is a privilege and honour to represent you all and the people across the city.

“We need to all work together to realise the potential for Glasgow. There is a desire and potential to change."
