Labour councillor apologises after saying Boris Johnson 'deserves' coronavirus

A councillor and town mayor has apologised after she said on Facebook that coronavirus-stricken Boris Johnson "completely deserves this".

The Prime Minister – who was admitted to St Thomas’ Hospital in London on Sunday, April 5 – was moved to intensive care on Monday evening after his "persistent" Covid-19 symptoms worsened.

Labour councillor Sheila Oakes, who represents Heanor East on Amber Valley Borough Council in Derbyshire and is also the town's mayor, posted on Facebook: "Sorry, he completely deserves this and he is one of the worst PMs we’ve ever had."

The councillor, who came in for criticism following the comment, has since apologised in a post on her Facebook page - admitting "it was a mistake".

“I understand that people are upset and I apologise", she said.

"It wasn't a very nice thing to say, even in anger. I was wrong and made a mistake.

"I hope that Mr Johnson makes a swift recovery and I hope that his family are safe and well and wish them well in what must be a very difficult time for them."

A spokeswoman for the Labour Party has confirmed that the party has launched a disciplinary investigation into Councillor Oakes' initial comment.

The party did not wish to comment any further.
