Labour Conference: When is it? Everything you need to know

Sir Keir Starmer has been under pressure after two high-profile Government departures (Leon Neal/PA) - (PA Wire)

Political party conference season is upon us, and Labour’s is next up.

Reform, and the Liberal Democrats are the two major parties to have had their conference already, and Labour is next up.

Here is everything we know about Labour’s conference.

When is it?

The Labour Party conference will be held from Sunday September 28 to Wednesday October 1 with MPs, councillors, mayors, activists, press and delegates all expected to go along.

Where is it?

Labour will return to Liverpool for a fourth year in a row for the party conference.

It will again take place at the ACC Liverpool conference venue - the same venue as last year.

Labour’s last conference to be held outside of Liverpool was in 2021, which took place in Brighton.

What is it?

Every autumn, UK political parties hold their annual conferences – gatherings of politicians, party members and affiliated groups.

The conferences are held over a number of days and are done to rally support for that particular political party.

Reform recently held theirs at the start of September in Birmingham, while the Lib Dem party held their in Bournemouth on September 20 to September 23.

The Conservative conference is due to take place October 5 to October 8 in Manchester.

What are the key talking points expected for this year?

Previews into the event suggest that Sir Keir Starmer will speak to the masses to tell them decisions must be made by the electorate as to how they want their future to look.

"The country is at a crossroads," he is expected to declare in a speech just ahead of the annual Labour conference.

The prime minister is set to tell his followers that there are two ways to move forward in the country at present - one is the way of "division and decline" with Reform UK, and the other of “unity and progress” under Labour.

And although there have been issues in the past few weeks with Rayner and Mandleson, that is not likely to be the only topic of conversation.

It has been suggested there could be a leadership challenge from Andy Burnham, current mayor of Greater Manchester, who has claimed MPs within the party have encouraged him to run for the top job.

Starmer is also still facing questions over Labour’s choice to keep the controversial two child benefit cap policy, which was initially put in place originally by the Conservatives.

The policy prevents families from claiming extra benefits on any children born after the second, and opponents want it dropped to help bring down child poverty.

As well as these issues is the ongoing issues of the current cost of living crisis after this week the OECD think tank predicted the UK will have the highest rate of inflation of any major economy this year.

The organisation also predicted that the economy will grow by just 1% in 2026, down from 1.4 %this year.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves will be in attendance and is preparing to unveil her Autumn Budget in November and will likely face questions as to how she will be filling the country’s £30 billion black hole.
