Labour banned from talking about Jeremy Corbyn's possible expulsion from party

Labour's top official has warned members against talking about ex-leader Jeremy Corbyn ’s possible expulsion.

The alert applies to all branch meetings “and any other party units” who have also been told they may not pass motions in Mr Corbyn’s defence.

General secretary David Evans warned Constituency Labour Parties in a letter not to discuss “any aspect of individual disciplinary cases”.

It followed a meeting of Labour MPs last week where Mr Corbyn’s name was not mentioned once in a discussion about the anti-Semitism report which led to his suspension.

An MP who was at the meeting – addressed by party leader Keir Starmer – said: “In 40 years I’ve never seen anything like it. It was a bit scary.

“Starmer spoke about the report at length, very persuasively.

Labour Leader Keir Starmer didn't mention Jeremy Corbyn at a meeting of Labour MPs last week (PA)

“He never mentioned JC once. Neither did anyone else in the following discussion.

"It’s like 1938 in the USSR, with the show trials. I’m not, and never have been, a fan of JC but it makes me feel a bit nervous.”

Mr Corbyn was suspended and had the Labour whip removed after he said anti-Semitism in the party under his leadership had been exaggerated.

Labour said: “It is a long-standing position that motions on individual disciplinary matters are not competent CLP business.”
