Labour appears to have woken up to the plight of thousands of EU citizens in the UK

Most Scots woke up this morning and switched on the radio to find out if, or when, we were leaving the EU.

But for thousands of European citizens living and working here, the uncertain question is whether they will be allowed to stay.

The UK Government has given begrudging assurances to EU citizens.

The Scottish Government, meanwhile, has gone out of its way to make it clear that, in this part of the UK, Europeans are, and will continue to be, welcome.

Labour also appears to have woken up to the plight of thousands of EU citizens who are resident in the UK.

Labour's Diane Abbott signals move to protect rights of Scotland's EU citizens

Diane Abbott’s comments that Labour will protect and honour the rights of EU citizens are welcome.

Until now, Labour was in danger of being painted with the same brush as the Tories on immigration, namely that freedom of movement would come to an end after Brexit.

Abbott, who would be Home Secretary in a Labour government, is signalling some distance from that manifesto commitment, arguing that for economic and social reasons UK migration policy would have to mirror closely existing EU rules.

For Scotland this is essential, as it is for the whole of Europe.

The population here is ageing faster than the rest of the UK and a new generation of taxpayers is needed to keep the wheels of the economy turning.

Note of complaint

Does it really have to take Judy Murray being turned down while trying to buy two doughnuts with a Scottish £10 note for the disdain of some southern shopkeepers to come to an end?

Introducing a Commons Bill to have Scottish tender recognised in England highlights the problem but we need a practical, not legal, solution.

Bill calling for Scottish banknotes to be accepted across UK lodged by MP

It might be one of the minor irritants of a visit to London to be snubbed by a shopkeeper or a bartender and to have your note scrutinised with suspicion.

But then it is an even greater pleasure to declare that you didn’t really need the doughnuts or the pint and to leave the goods sitting at the till.

It really is a shame that the increasing use of contactless payment could rob Scottish visitors of this must-do of any visit to London.

Cheers to Jackie
