Labour campaigner in her 70s 'breaks ribs' after being attacked by female thug

A Labour activist in her 70s was injured in a "shocking" attack on the campaign trail, local volunteers said.

The female canvasser, who has not been named, was "pushed over flat into the road" by her attacker, according to a Facebook post from the local party in North Herefordshire.

It came after a woman approached the group, took a pen from the group of volunteers and defaced a party banner.

The woman was then seen "ranting and swearing, using foul and abusive language" and calling the canvassers "Marxists."

She's also alleged to have told them to "get out" of her country, according to the group.

The woman was “badly shaken and may have cracked ribs”.

West Midlands Ambulance service confirmed a crew was dispatched to respond to the incident at 11.34 AM yesterday.

The victim was given treatment by a community first responder, but declined further treatment.

A local police spokesman told the Hereford Times: "Officers attended and spoke to the victim, who said that she didn’t wish for charges to be brought.

"We continue to engage with both parties to ensure an appropriate outcome for the victim."

A spokesman for the Labour campaign said: "This was deeply shocking.

"We are pleased to say that our volunteer is recovering from her injuries and the shock of being assaulted and we are grateful to the police and the ambulance service for their assistance."

Earlier a 72-year-old Labour supporter was hospitalised in Rotherham with a suspected broken jaw after he was attacked on a doorstep.

A man, 51, has since been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
