The federal Labor staffer and law student who allegedly raped a woman earlier this year has been sacked from his position.
Bean MP David Smith has confirmed that Alexander Matters' contract was terminated effective immediately on Saturday, after he was charged in the ACT Magistrates Court with two counts of sexual intercourse without consent.
Mr Matters, who is studying law at Australian National University, worked part time in Mr Smith's electorate office.
Mr Smith said his thoughts were with alleged victim.
"These are serious issues currently being dealt with by the appropriate authorities," he said.
"It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."
The two charges, which relate to an alleged incident on April 10, both name the same woman as the complainant.
The allegations do not relate to Mr Matters' conduct in Mr Smith's office.
Police were first notified of the matter in August, and investigators received a formal statement from the woman early last week.
Mr Matters, 20, did not enter a plea when he appeared in court on Saturday morning, before he was sent for a mental health assessment.
He is due to return to court upon competition of the mental health assessment to determine his bail application.
