Labor rules out forming coalition as NSW heads towards minority government

NSW Opposition Leader Michael Daley says he is not negotiating with potential crossbench MPs, as the reality of minority government draws closer for both Labor and the Coalition.

A Newspoll published in The Australian has the Coalition and Labor deadlocked at 50-50 on a two-party preferred basis, less than two weeks before the state election on March 23.

The result is identical to two previous NSW Newspolls from January this year, and another in February-March 2018.

Gladys Berejiklian's Liberal-National Coalition would be plunged into minority government if it loses six seats at the election.

Mr Daley said he was not concerned by the poll result, and was not in negotiation with members on the crossbench.

"If it does lead to a situation where we don't have a majority, we'll take each piece of legislation on its merits and deal with it on a piece-by-piece basis," he said.

"I will not be going into formal coalition with anybody."

Mr Daley denied Labor was still being punished by voters for its previous time in office, which was marred by scandals.

"They don't bear grudges, they're not looking in their rear vision mirror," he said.

"It might be that the voters haven't switched on yet but in the next two weeks, fingers crossed, they'll switch on and vote Labor."

Ms Berejiklian deflected questions about the prospect of minority government at a press conference this morning.

"We have confidence that the people of NSW will cast their votes and they'll make the judgement," she said.

"I'm not going to speculate on what that judgement is, that's a matter for them."
