A re-elected Labor government would spend more than $17 million to upgrade local shopping precincts across Canberra, Chief Minister Andrew Barr will announce on Sunday.

On the eve of the start of the early voting period in the ACT election, Mr Barr will promise to upgrade 10 local shops across the territory if his party is victorious on October 17.

Shopping centres in Campbell, Narrabundah, Kaleen south, Duffy, Evatt, Macquarie, Monash, Calwell, Lanyon and Cooleman court would be in line for a refresh in the next four years under the commitment.

Work would include upgrades to landscaping, footpaths, improvements for mobility access and extra seating.

The Campbell, Kaleen and Duffy shops would be upgraded first, after the ACT government completed feasibility studies on those projects in the past parliamentary term.

The commitment includes $1.2 million to upgrade public toilets at Lyneham, Florey and Colbee Court shops.

Having already promised $5 million to upgrade footpaths and roads in Pialligo at the start of the campaign, Mr Barr will sell Sunday's announcement as Labor's commitment to more than $22 million worth of shopping precinct upgrades.

"We know Canberrans love their local shopping centres and upgrading these facilities will encourage the community to shop locally, ensuring new jobs and a strong economic recovery right across the territory," Mr Barr said in a statement.
