Labor has promised $17 million for upgrades to Singleton Police Station as part of its Upper Hunter by-election campaign, but has conceded the money is likely to remain a "priority" for the party until after the 2023 NSW Parliament election - if Labor wins government.
Upper Hunter candidate Jeff Drayton, Opposition leader Jodi McKay and shadow police minister Linda Voltz announced the funding plan on Wednesday.
"Locals have been calling for upgrades to this tired facility for years," Ms McKay said.
"The government is asking local officers to do 21st century policing in a 19th century building."
When asked about delivery of the funding - being part of a by-election campaign which will not end with the Opposition taking government - Ms McKay said Labor had "made a promise we intend to keep".
"But right now, we will continue to push the government to deliver much-needed facilities for Singleton police officers to do their job," she said.
"Our commitment is to $17 million and this will be a priority for us if we're successful in 2023."
Mr Drayton said he believed the upgrades would have already been delivered if it was a station on Sydney's North Shore rather than in Singleton.
"Our region pumps billions into the NSW economy and in return we get police stations without proper toilets," he said.
