Labor Day in L.A.: Wilmington rally, Exposition Park music festival

Sept. 07--A parade and rally in Wilmington and a concert in Exposition Park are among the events that promise to "celebrate the spirit of Labor Day" across Los Angeles County on Monday.

Locals who have yet to skip town or head for the beach can take part in the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Labor Coalition's "Labor Solidarity Parade."

A march was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Broad Avenue and E Street in Wilmington and will be followed by a rally held at Banning Park at noon. The rally will include speakers, music and a barbecue, organizers say.

Later Monday afternoon, doors open for the "Labor Day Music Festival" in Exposition Park. The all-day event -- which charges admission -- will feature a lineup including a Grammy-nominated jazz singer and percussionist, a Jamaican reggae act and a former "American Idol" band director, according to an overview on the city's tourism website.

The performances will benefit a nonprofit that invests in the Southland's low-income communities, the website said.

In a proclamation declaring Monday Labor Day, Gov. Jerry Brown noted the ways Californians might mark the occasion.

"This year, as we enjoy traditions ranging from beach outings and barbecues to an annual change in the rules of high fashion, we should remember how much progress has allowed us to celebrate this Labor Day," Brown said.
