Labor criticises disability care rollout

Data shows about 63.6 per cent of disability care residents have had one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. (AAP)

Fewer than half of Australia's disability care residents have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus almost six months into the rollout.

Federal government data revealed on Monday shows 17,311 residents, about 63.6 per cent, have received one dose.

Some 12,132 people living in disability care, about 44.5 per cent, have been fully vaccinated.

Health Minister Greg Hunt encouraged all residents, as well as their friends and family, to give consent to receive vaccination.

"The loss of life amongst disability residents in Australia is less than the average of the loss of life for all Australians," he told parliament.

"It has been one of our singular national achievements and there are many, many people around Australia to be thanked for that."

Disability care residents were in the highest priority category for vaccination when the rollout started on February 22.

Labor's disability spokesman Bill Shorten criticised the minister after the figures were released during Question Time.

"Instead of taking responsibility, Greg Hunt tells families to co-operate in obtaining consent. Too slow and too much buck passing," he said.
