The ABC has officially called the election for Labor and Anthony Albanese, according to an excitingly early call from Antony Green.
It’s not even 8:30pm on election night but in a true chaos move for his final election with the ABC, Antony Green has officially called it for Labor.
In a victory speech just after 10pm, Albanese declared a majority Labor government.
“Australians have voted for a future that holds true to these values, a future built on everything that brings us together as Australians and everything that sets our nation apart from the world,” he said.
“Australians have chosen to face global challenges the Australian way, looking after each other while building for the future. And to serve these values, meet these challenges, these opportunities, and build that better and stronger future, Australians have chosen a majority Labor
government.”
Speaking on his conversation with Peter Dutton, Albanese scolded fans for “booing” him, stressing that Australians should treat each other with respect.
“What we do in Australia is we treat people with respect. I think Peter for his generous words at the end of what has been a very hard fought campaign, and I want to take this opportunity to wish Peter and generally in their family — Kira Lee, all the best for their future,” he said.
As it currently stands, Labor is on track to retain its majority, but that is yet to be confirmed.
Albanese will be the first Prime Minister to win back-to-back elections since John Howard in 2004.
Sky News has also called the election for Labor and Albanese, for what it’s worth.
