Labor announce Arboretum upgrade plan to improve accessibility

The Labor Party has pledged to upgrade tracks and trails at the National Arboretum if re-elected. Picture: Jamila Toderas.

Canberra's National Arboretum would receive a $2.2 million funding injection to improve wheelchair accessibility and upgrade dirt tracks under a re-elected Labor government.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the boost would include an upgrade to 4.5 kilometres of the facility's 17km network, taking them from dirt tracks to tarmac to improve access in wet weather.

It would also include wheelchair accessible paths in Central Valley and the Himalayan Cedar Forest, Mr Barr said.

He said the announcement would be another infrastructure project pushed forward in a bid to help the ACT recover from the economic impact of the pandemic.

"Our city is facing a huge economic challenge and creating jobs is our number one priority," he said.

"We have a comprehensive plan to grow our employment base to more than 250,000 local jobs by 2025, and we won't do it with magic pudding economics."

The National Arboretum received $390,000 funding at the start of the year to install a new cafe, Mr Barr said.
