Labanc shot leads Sharks past Red Wings in shootout

SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Kevin Labanc scored on his shootout attempt and Martin Jones didn't allow a goal on three tries by the Detroit Red Wings, as the San Jose Sharks earned a 4-3 victory on Saturday night at SAP Center to extend their win streak to six games.

Labanc beat Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard with a wrist shot upstairs, and Jones didn't allow a goal on tries by Frans Nielsen, Andreas Athanasiou and Dylan Larkin as they improved their record to 10-10-1.

It was a fitting ending for Labanc, who had a goal and two assists in regulation time.

In overtime, Brent Burns was called for tripping a streaking Athanasiou with 3:21 left in overtime. Burns, though, felt he made contact with the puck on a sweeping stick check before his stick tripped up Athanasiou, but the Sharks killed the penalty.

Erik Karlsson celebrated his 700th career NHL game, as his power play goal in the second period gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead.

Karlsson took a backhand pass from Labanc and one-timed a shot past Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard at the 12:32 mark of the second period. Logan Couture also assisted on the goal, as he and Labanc had three points each through three periods.

Jones, making his sixth straight start, had 15 saves through two periods, but was helpless on the Red Wings' tying goal at the 15:46 mark of the third period.

With Detroit on a 2 on 1, Athanasiou one-timed a pass from Valtteri Filppula past Jones for his second goal of the game that tied the score 3-3.

Karlsson's goal was just his second of the season, as he snapped a personal goal drought that had reached 11 games.

Labanc opened the scoring at the 18:59 mark of the first period. After he carried the puck across the Red Wings' blue line, he stopped near the top of the circle and fired a shot on Howard.

The rebound came to Logan Couture, whose shot was also blocked. But Labanc was there to fire the puck in a largely empty net for his sixth goal of the season.

The Sharks took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Marc-Edouard Vlasic just 1:11 into the second period. But the Red Wings responded with goals from Taro Hirose and Athanasiou at the 1:24 and 11:34 marks, respectively.
