Verdi’s La Traviata is the quintessential operatic tragedy - with rousing music, including Sempre libre and the famous drinking song, the Brindisi. It is an escape from everyday life. Thought the story of La Traviata is exotic to the audience, it was remarkably close to Verdi’s own life.
The story tells of a beautiful courtesan who, after initial restraint, falls in love with a young nobleman. The couple begin a life together until the nobleman’s father presses upon the courtesan the effect of the relationship on his family’s reputation. The opera features Lorina Gore in her Australian debut, international tenor Rame Lahaj in his Australian debut, conducted by Renato Palumbo.
