La Rochelle v Bristol Bears European Challenge Cup: How to watch, TV details, team news and more

It’s quarter final weekend in Europe as the best eight teams in the Heineken Champions Cup and Challenge Cup look to secure semi-final berths.

Bristol Bears are in La Rochelle for their last-eight tie against the Top 14 side and Pat Lam's team are one of the few to have won at the noisy and atmospheric Stade Marcel Deflandre, with a 13-3 triumph during the group stages in November.

La Rochelle then had their revenge at Ashton Gate in December, winning 35-22.

Here's how you can keep on top of the action this weekend.

Every game feels like a knockout match now says Pat Lam

How can I follow the game?

The match kicks off at 12:45 BST. Bristol Live will be at the game on Sunday and all weekend, live blogging the match, with all the build-up, team news, reaction, highlights and analysis thrown in.

Live commentary will also be running on BBC Radio Bristol from 12:00.

The tie is being broadcast on BT Sport 3, with the network showing every other quarter-final this weekend across the Champions and Challenge Cup.

Team news and line-ups

No Charles Piutau for the Bears with the New Zealand full-back ruled out for the next 3-4 weeks with a calf injury. Inside centre Tusu Pisi makes his first start since January in eight changes to the XV that lost to Worcester last weekend. Yann Thomas and Harry Thacker form a new-look front row.

Jean-Victor Goillot starts at scrum-half for La Rochelle with Tawera Kerr Barlow injured, but Victor Vito returns at No8 to captain the French team.

Bristol Bears could take a giant step towards Champions Cup qualification this weekend

Bristol Bears head coach Pat Lam (Nizaam Jones/JMP)

What are the coaches saying?

Bears head coach Pat Lam said: "This is genuine knockout rugby and – as with every game for the remainder of the season – it’s a massive game and we need a finals rugby mindset."

La Rochelle Director of Rugby Jono Gibbes said: "Bristol Bears have a different game to what we see in the TOP 14. It is going to be a big challenge."

Thatchers Gold Series Episode 3: 'You can lose to any other team but not Bristol Bears' says Bath boss Todd Blackadder

What's the form?

The Bears had briefly alleviated any Premiership relegation fears with back-to-back wins over Gloucester and Northampton but last week's defeat to Worcester has left them looking over their shoulder again.

La Rochelle are seventh in the Top 14 but have slipped out of play-off contention after a run of four straight defeats. Their last domestic victory was February 17, beating relegation strugglers Grenoble 28-21.

Who's the referee?

Experienced Irish official John Lacey has the whistle with Frank Murphy and Sean Gallagher as his assistants and Simon McDowell the TMO.

Interestingly, Lacey, who has taken charge of 37 tests since 2010, is retiring at the end of the season to take take up a High Performance Referee coaching and talent identification role with the IRFU.
