LOS ANGELES _ Coroner's officials Sunday identified the man whose death at the hands of police Saturday afternoon sparked protests in South Los Angeles and Hancock Park.
He was identified as Carnell Snell Jr., 18, of Los Angeles, said investigator Rudy Molano of the coroner's office.
Snell was shot after he bailed out of a moving vehicle during a police pursuit in South Los Angeles around 1 p.m. Los Angeles police opened fire after chasing him to the back of a home, which relatives later identified as his residence.
Officers tried to stop the vehicle Snell was riding in because it had a paper license plate, which suggested that the car may have been stolen. But it's not clear what type of vehicle it was or whether the vehicle was stolen, said LAPD spokeswoman Jenny Houser.
Police have not released any information about the driver of the vehicle, or the passengers, one of whom also bailed out and fled from police on foot.
Police have not described what happened in the moments before the shooting, but an Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said a handgun was found.
Dozens of protesters gathered at the scene of Snell's death Saturday night, interrupting a police news conference and writing Snell's name on the street in chalk.
Another group of protesters marched to Mayor Eric Garcetti's home in Hancock Park later Saturday.
