Horror is being represented at this year’s Golden Globes thanks to the Foreign Language category.

In a genre that is not usually given much love at awards ceremonies, fans will be happy to see that La Llorona has been nominated.

The Guatemalan film is directed by Jayro Bustamante, and follows an ageing and paranoid war criminal who is haunted by the ghosts of his past.

La Llorona has also been submitted by Guatemala as their awards hopeful for the Best International Feature Film prize at the Oscars.

In the UK, it is available to stream via Amazon Prime Video’s Shudder add-on.

The film is not be confused with The Curse of La Llorona, the Hollywood horror film starring Linda Cardellini that was released in 2019.

Missing out on a nomination in the Foreign Language category was another horror film, this one titled Impetigore.

However, the film – which is Indonesia’s awards submission – could well earn an Oscar nomination when they’re announced next month.

Nominated alongside La Llorona is Another Round, The Life Ahead, Minari and Two of Us.

Leading this year’s pack is Mank, with six nominations, and The Trial of the Chicago 7, which earned five nominations. Both films were released on Netflix.
