La Liga chief Javier Tebas criticises CAS over Man City Champions League decision

As Manchester City celebrate the news that their Champions League ban has been overturned, there is naturally some opposition to the decision.

UEFA, who brought the charges against City for 'serious breaches' of Financial Fair Play regulations, have noted the decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport to strike off the ban, but that hasn't stopped all the criticism.

In their decision, CAS said the allegations against City were either not established or time-barred, although they did keep a 10 million euro fine against the Blues for failing to co-operate with UEFA.

However, the debate into the future of FFP and UEFA's ability to properly enforce the rules has already begun in some quarters, and City's rivals digest the news.

One of the most outspoken critics of City's spending is La Liga chief Javier Tebas, who has unsurprisingly voiced his objection to the CAS ruling.

But instead of criticising the FFP regulations, Tebas has questioned the suitability of CAS in being an impartial arbitrator in football matters - despite the court being used in most sports as the ultimate ruling body.

Tebas said: “We have to reassess whether the Cas is the appropriate body to which to appeal institutional decisions in football.

"Switzerland is a country with a great history of arbitration, the Cas is not up to standard.”

City are now free to compete in next season's Champions League competition after securing a top four finish in the Premier League this season. The club said they welcome the CAS ruling, with the full reasons for the decision to be published later this week.
